making everybody happy …
with Elio de Angelis having the benefits of the more powerful Lotus 93T which housed Renault’s turbo V6, Nigel Mansell had to make do with the older Lotus 91, still driven by the atmospheric Ford DFV V8
eventually Mansell would get a turbo powered Lotus (94T) as well, half way through the season
Nigel was given the chance to test Lotus’ first attempt at an (re)active suspended car, here tried out at the 1983 Long Beach venue, he wasn’t very successful with the car but the team would go on to test the system on several more occasions during the year
